Press Release - Republic Day of India 2022

The 73rd Republic Day of India was commemorated on 26th January 2022 under the aegis of AKAM by organizing two celebrations and a magnificent scenographic light projection in the centre of Rome. 

2.  The celebration of 73rd Republic Day of India commenced in the morning with an event held with much gaiety and patriotic fervour on the terrace and in the multi-purpose hall of the Embassy of India, Rome. The celebration was attended by over 100 people, among them were Embassy officials, family members, representatives of the Indian community including students, preists and friends of India. 

3. The event commenced at 0930 hrs with the unfurling of the National Flag by Ambassador Dr. Neena Malhotra, followed by the singing of the National Anthem on the terrace. Thereafter, in the Hall of the Chancery, the Ambassador read out excerpts from the address of Hon’ble President to the nation on the eve of the Republic Day and shared her felicitation and remarks with the gathered audience. A Cultural programme followed, with the participation of the Chorus of the Fathers’ and Sisters’ Union of Rome, a duo of flutists who also performed on patriotic songs and a traditional dance performance. Light refreshments were served at the end of the programme.

4. To mark the Republic Day, a gala reception was also organized by the Embassy from 1900 hrs to 2100 at the Hotel St. Regis. Mr. Manlio di Stefano, Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, was the Chief Guest at the function. Among the other dignitaries who graced the occasion, were (i) Senator Roberta Pinotti, President of Italy India Parliamentary Friendship Group (ii) Hon'ble Renzo Tondo, member of Italy India Parliamentary Friendship Group,  (iii) Hon'ble Member of Parliament Ms Mara Lapia (iii) Hon’ble Mr Enzo Salera, Mayor of Cassino and numerous other institutional representatives. The programme began with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the eminent guests, playing of National Anthems of India and Italy, followed by the welcome speech by the Ambassador and by the Chief Guest. Thereafter, dance performance by the BollyMasala Dance Company enthralled the audience. Dinner was served at the end of the programme. Around 180 guests, including officials of the Italian government, members of the Consular Corps, representatives of Rome-based UN organizations, Italian friends of India and academicians as well as members of the Indian community from Rome and nearby areas attended the function. 

5. On the occasion of the Republic Day of India, the façade of one of the buildings of the majestic Baths of Diocletian, a unique monumental complex for size and exceptional state of preservation dating back to the IV century, was illuminated in tricolour lights. The guests coming for the reception and the general public of Rome could admire the Indian tricolour on one of the most important archaeological sites of the city. It is the first time that illumination with the Indian Tricolour of such an important archaeological complex was organized in Italy.
