Introductory Information

All foreign nationals, including children, require visa to enter India.

The Embassy of India in Rome covers the regions of Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily and SardiniaAll those who currently reside in the other Italian regions have to apply at the Consulate General of India, Milan.

In case of change of residence from the area under the jurisdiction of Consulate General of India, Milan to the area under the jurisdiction of Embassy of India, Rome applicant has to submit proof of residence (historic certificate of residence issued in the last on month/ valid carta di identità/ valid permit of stay) along with the application form.

Also minors are required to apply for visa on separate passports.

Visa applicants are required to apply at the counter in person. In case applicant is not able to come to the Embassy he/she can appoint one of the accredited agencies available at the above link. Applicants who have lived and /or resided outside Italy over the last two years should necessarily apply in person.

Proof of current residence in Italy is required. Residence may be proved through the following documents:

  • Valid Italian identity card
  • Valid Permit of Stay in Italy
  • Historic Residence Certificate issued in the last one month.

Validity of visa starts from the day of issuance.

Applicants are advised to read the specifications/conditions on the visa stickers carefully.

Processing of tourist, business and conference visa applications for those who have been resident in Italy for the last two years normally takes 1 to 3 days subject to compliance and as per the requirements.

Applicants residing outside Italy are advised to apply for visa in their country of residence.

Applicants who do not reside in Italy or have resided in Italy for less than two years can apply for Tourist Visa only and will be also required to give a written declaration clearly explaining the reason why they are applying for visa at Embassy of India, Rome. 

Italian nationals holding double/ multiple nationalities should produce a proof of residence in Italy for the last two years (historic certificate of residence issued in the last one month, valid Italian carta d’identità issued at least two years ago, valid permit of stay issued at least two years ago).

Tourist Visa-on-Arrival with a maximum validity of 30 days with single entry facility will be granted at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata airports only, for the nationals of eleven countries viz. Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar and Indonesia. (Tourist Visa-on-Arrival can be availed for a maximum of two times in a calendar year.)

Please note that employment, entry, business, student visas must be extended in India at the FRRO (Foreign Regional Registration Office) or FRO (Foreign Registration Office) and should not be re-applied for at the Embassy unless the concerned contract or organization/company is a different one.

Each visa application is considered on its merit and the Embassy may ask for additional information at any stage during the processing of the application. The fact that an application has been accepted does not guarantee that the visa will be granted.

Visa fees is non-refundable even if visa is declined. The Embassy reserves the right of deciding the duration of visa irrespective of the fees tendered at the time of making application.

All foreigners while in India are advised to ensure that they abide by the law of the land and refrain from contracting Muttah marriage or indulge in sex tourism. Indulgence in any such unlawful or undesirable practices would be dealt with strictly.

All original documents have to be shown at the visa counters for verification. Photocopies need to be self-attested by the applicant and  attached with the visa application.

Change of purpose mentioned in visa is not allowed, unless approved by FRRO (Foreign Regional Registration Office)

Please Note: Persons holding long term visas (having validity exceeding 6 months) are normally expected to stay in India for a maximum of 6 months during each visit. Persons of Indian origin holding multiple entry X-visas, visiting India to meet relatives or for social purposes, are required to register with the FRO/FRRO within 14 days of first arrival only if they intend to stay continuously for more than 180 days. This registration is required during the first visit after the visa is issued. Subsequent travels using the same visa do not require registration. Children below the age of 16 years are exempted from this requirement. All other visitors to India, including those of Indian origin, holding any other category of visa valid for more than 6 months should register with the FRO/FRRO within 14 days of arrival in India, if their stay exceeds 180 days on each visit.
